Latest news at Ashmount School......
We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone at New Farm Christmas Trees in Cadeby who donated, and delivered, a 10 foot tree to Ashmount this year.
The tree stands proudly on display in our main foyer and has been beautifully decorated by our pupils with their hand-made decorations.
Staff have also created a sensory Winter Wonderland experience for our pupils to explore in our Music Room.
We would like to congratulate Ashmount volunteer Shaun Crate for being named runner-up in the Charnwood Sports Awards in December 2018.
Shaun was named as one of two runners-up in the 'Joe Humphries Special Recognition Award'.
It is always difficult to highlight specific volunteers for recognition. However, volunteer Shaun Crate is, without doubt, one of the most inspirational individuals to volunteer in our school to date.
Shaun (27) started volunteering at Ashmount approximately four years ago and he now volunteers in our school for three days every week.
Shaun supports pupils with special educational needs of all ages. Last year, Shaun supported weekly swimming sessions and weekly PE sessions, working with pupils with complex needs and pupils with autism spectrum conditions, many of whom also have physical disabilities. Shaun also works alongside our support staff at lunchtimes on three days a week to help our pupils with the most profound and multiple learning difficulties to develop their fine and gross motor skills.
What is perhaps most inspirational is the fact that Shaun has cerebral palsy and so has his only challenges to overcome when providing support to our pupils. Shaun explains that he is not always as quick as he would like to be in getting around school and that he sometimes has to repeat himself to make himself properly understood.
In Shaun’s own words, ‘You have two choices: you can sit back feeling sorry for yourself, or you can put a smile on your face and get on with it’.
It is no surprise that some of our students who have physical disabilities feel comfortable in asking Shaun personal questions about the challenges he faces.
Shaun is quite simply one of the best volunteers we have ever had at Ashmount. His dedication and commitment to providing the very highest standards of support and care for our students is exemplary, and we are delighted that his efforts have been recognised.
Thank you to the 30 strong team of pupils, staff and their families who ran, walked or were pushed along the 5km route around Loughborough on Sunday 2nd December 2018. This was the eighth consecutive year that Ashmount has taken part in the Santa Fun Run. All participants were presented with a medal on the finish line. Over 1,200 Santas turned out this year to raise money for some very worthwhile causes.
Special thanks must also go to the 9 staff from the Leicester City Football Club Community Trust who came along to run the course on behalf of Ashmount School too.
We are delighted to announce that Ashmount has been shortlisted for three awards in the Leicester Mercury Education Awards 2018:
The winners and finalists of the Leicester Mercury Education Awards 2018 will be announced at a presentation event being held at the King Power Stadium in December 2018.
Thank you to everyone who supported our recent Children in Need Day.
Pupils, staff and volunteers donated £1 to attend school in something spotty or bright for the day, and our Key Stage 4 students made and sold their own key rings, badges and biscuits as part of their Enterprise work.
The total raised so far is a fantastic £335.62.
Good luck to all of our pupils, parents, staff and volunteers taking part in this year's 5km Loughborough Santa Fun Run and Walk in a bid to raise money for the school and other charities.
The fun run, organised by Loughborough Rotary Club, raises money for local charities including Rainbows, Loros, Prost Aid, Alzheimers Society and Dementia UK.
Competitors will be dressed in red and blue santa costumes for the run, which starts and finishes in Loughborough Market Place.
Come and join us at our Christmas Fayre between 11am and 2pm on Sunday 9th December 2018.

There will also be a special guest visit from Father Christmas and his elves.
Tickets for our raffle are available from the office.
The Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal 2018
We have a range of products on sale from our front office this year. 100% of the profits go to the Royal British Legion .
The Poppy Appeal is the Royal British Legion’s biggest fundraising campaign held every year in November, the period of Remembrance. This year, join us as we mark the end of the WW1 centenary by saying Thank You to all who served, sacrificed and changed our world.
Further information about the support provided by The Royal British Legion can be found on their website: www.britishlegion.org.uk/get-involved/ways-to-give/fundraising-appeals/poppy-appeal/
Many thanks to all of our pupils and staff and their families who have donated items to this year’s shoebox appeal. We are delighted to announce that we have sent off 20 shoeboxes on behalf of the school.
The Family Shoeboxes of gifts are given to families who often have to make a choice between buying food or fuel at Christmas time – buying presents is just not a priority. Many of these families do not have running water, heating or electricity. Some live in appalling conditions, often living in just one or two rooms, and life for them is a real struggle to survive.
Boxes are sent to Romania, Bulgaria, Moldova and Ukraine. Our chosen charity is small enough that they have a personal relationship with all the key contacts in Eastern Europe who distribute your Shoeboxes and they do spot checks to ensure that your boxes are received by the correct people.
Thank you again for your donations.

Thank you to all of our pupils and their families, and staff, who were able to attend our Halloween- themed disco from 6pm until 7.30pm on Monday 29th October 2018.
It was great to see so many fantastic costumes. Pupils loved having the opportunity to get dressed up and dance along to their favourite songs.
The dates for our Christmas-themed disco will be confirmed soon.
